With social distancing becoming the new normal, many meetings are now taking place online. While most video conference software is quite easy to use, things can get a bit more tricky when it comes to adding a Russian interpreter to your Zoom, Skype or Microsoft Teams meetings.
There are two main ways to have interpretation available during an online meeting. The first is to have the interpretation feature integrated in the online meeting platform itself. The second is to deliver interpretation through a separate, specialized interpretation software.
Adding a Russian interpreter to a Zoom meeting
In the first case the interpretation and the meeting itself are part of the same software. Once an online meeting or video conference starts, nothing changes for those participants who do not need interpretation. They continue with the meeting as they normally would. Those participants that require interpretation use a menu to select the language they would like to hear. Simple as that!

We will start with the simple scenario, using Zoom. Let us say you are a host planning a meeting with 20 participants. 15 of them speak English and need no interpretation. Five participants speak Russian and, therefore, need a remote interpreting in Zoom feature. You set up a Zoom meeting and invite all 20 participants like you normally would.
You also invite your interpreters to the meeting. Once the interpreters join, you designate them as “Interpreters” from English into Russian in Zoom. You can then ask the five Russian-speaking participants to select interpretation into Russian in Zoom. Done! You are ready to start your meeting. Your Zoom meeting interpreter will be working “behind the scenes” to deliver the Russian interpretation to those who need it.
Other ways to organise interpreting in Zoom
The second scenario is used for more complex events. Here, you use two separate platforms: one for the meeting itself, and another for interpretation. You choose the software to use for the meeting. It can be any platform you or your company are already used to – Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, etc.
The interpretation is then delivered through a separate platform. Participants that need interpretation download an app to their smartphone, select the language they would like to hear… and that is all there is to it! If a participant prefers to listen to the interpretation using their computer (and not their smartphone), that is also possible.
The second scenario is more complex, with the meeting taking place on one platform and interpretation delivered on another. Let us imagine you are planning a larger online conference with 300 participants. 100 if them are Russian speakers, and another 100 speak only French. There will be presentations in English, Russian and French. You still set up and conduct your meeting using Zoom. You still invite all 300 participants to the Zoom meeting.
The interpreters, however, connect to a separate, special interpretation platform. Those participants that require interpretation also connect to the interpretation platform by simply downloading an app and choosing a language they would like to listen to (English, Russian or French).
